In-Situ Float Replacement - VIDEO

We are pleased to share a video showing our recent project to replace an ageing concrete float under a finger pontoon using a purpose-built ScaffFloat dry dock in order to install our ReefFloat prototype. 

Dry Dock Construction

Our team successfully constructed a mini dry dock utilising submersible ScaffFloats. This setup features bottom valves that facilitated water ingress and egress, while a two-stage fan provides compressed air to manage ballasting. With a lift capacity of up to 3 tons, this system effectively supports the entire operation.

Replacement Methodology 

The dry dock was manoeuvred beneath the finger pontoon, where air was injected to displace water and subsequently lift the pontoon until the floats became buoyant. Following this, the old float was unbolted and removed, allowing the new ReefFloat to be installed in its place. Air was then released from the float, lowering the weight of the finger pontoon back onto the floats. This efficient method enables us to replace marina pontoon floats on-site, minimising costs, reducing disturbances for berth holders, and preventing loss of mooring revenue

Environmentally sustainable marina float

ReefFloat represents our commitment to sustainability and marine ecosystem health. Constructed entirely from 100% concrete, it features an ultra-low-density waterproof core and a robust engineered skin. Notably, ReefFloat is inert in marine environments, promoting biodiversity. At the end of its lifecycle, which we anticipate to be significantly longer than that of EPS foam concrete floats, it can be crushed and recycled at minimal or no cost. This is in stark contrast to concrete floats filled with EPS foam, which are classified as hazardous waste and often incur disposal costs equivalent to purchasing a new float (£500-£1,000), thereby significantly escalating their overall life-cycle expenses.

METSTRADE 2025

Following the successful launch of ReefFloat at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) last year, where we were honoured as a finalist for a DAME award, we are expediting our plans to bring this product to market. Increased investment will enable us to capitalise on this opportunity, providing marinas and pontoon manufacturers with a viable alternative to EPS foam.

Falmouth Harbour Update

The ReefFloat prototype is currently on display at the Visitors Yacht Haven in Falmouth, Cornwall. Their CEO, Miles, and his dedicated team have decided to avoid installing any new foam-filled floats in the marina, opting instead for foam-free alternatives in the near future.

Please note that our team is managing our core ScaffFloat business and several significant projects, but work on ReefFloat is steadily progressing to ensure it receives the necessary resources for development.
